This Weekend, Tell It Slant will Explore Relationships Between Women (15 Feet in the Air!)

Art should broaden our horizons; it should make us see the world a little differently once it’s done with us.

Until recently, I’d always thought of dance as something that takes place on a dance floor, in whatever form that may be. Last September, though, my understanding of dance as a “grounded” art form was set free when I was introduced to aerial dance through Tangle Movement Arts’ performance, LOOP. Dance became as up and down as it was left and right.

Lucky for us, Tangle Movement Arts is back again with a new performance, Tell It Slant. If you’ve never experienced aerial dance, don’t miss this opportunity! Running Thursday March 12th until Saturday, March 14th, Tell It Slant will premier at the Christ Church Neighborhood House at 20 N. American St. in Old City.

Whereas LOOP’s narrative was centered around a unifying theme, Tell It Slant will be more of a “cabaret,” exploring different types of relationships between women; relationships of friendship and love, relationships based on strength and on self-loathing, and one’s own relationship with the feminine power of giving life.

The members of Tangle Movement Arts proudly consider their aerial dance theater company a feminist company. As Lauren Rile Smith, founder of Tangle Movement Arts explains, “the feminist backbone of every Tangle show is representing the power of women-- individually and in combination. Tangle's performances are a chance to show a dozen strong women together onstage, with diverse body shapes and gender presentations, and explore the multi-layered relationships that arise between them.”

Tell It Slant will not only showcase the core members of Tangle Movement Arts, but guest artists as well. Local performers Caitlin Donaghy and Nina Giacobbe take part in the show, as well as international performing artists, Megan Gendell and Lauren Feldman. The union of these diverse artists has produced a unique performance that is rich in circus arts and dance theater, and brings elements of gymnastics and ballet to the stage as well.

Tell It Slant promises to be a one-of-a-kind performance, packed with talent, creativity, ambition and emotion. For information on how to purchase tickets, click here.
